What is an Unmanned Aircraft System?

The term for unmanned aircraft has morphed over the years from drone to remotely piloted vehicle (RPV) to unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and now to unmanned aircraft system (UAS). Recently, the U.S. Department of Defense stated that the currently accepted terms are unmanned aircraft system (UAS) and unmanned aircraft (UA). UAS describes the entire system, including the ground station, support equipment, launching equipment, etc. UA refers to the aircraft itself.
